Against all the odds of living in a new city with practically no friends that I knew before, I am somehow still keeping my head above water.
誰も知り合いの居なかったこの街に乗り込んで来て、何とかまだサバイバルしている。
Last weekend my band returned to play at a venue in the suburb of Chicago. We had a great crowd of blues lovers that night. My next gig at the same venue has already been set. It is nice that my music is accepted in the area where I just moved in. I seem to be gradually growing a fan base there.
先週末には、自分のバンドでシカゴ郊外の店でライブを行なった。その店では2回目だったので、その夜はブルースファンが我々を目当てに来てくれた。また次回のブッキングも既に決まっている。引っ越した先で早々に、自分の音楽が受け入れられるのは嬉しい限りだ。少しずつファンが付きかけているようだ。
In parallel, my collaboration with the Chicago Westside blues harpist & singer Omar Coleman is going strong. I have had a few opportunities to join his headlining gigs at the premiere blues clubs in Chicago. We will also be headed to Japan in May for a tour.
それと平行して、シカゴはウェストサイドのブルースハーピスト兼シンガーの、オマー・コールマンとのコラボも順調に進んでいる。シカゴのトップブルースクラブで既に彼のバンドのギタリストとして何度か仕事をしたし、この春には、一緒に日本ツアーに出かける。
Last night when I played with Omar Coleman Band at the Buddy Guy’s Legends, Mr. Buddy Guy himself suddenly appeared on the stage (pic below). It only happens in Chicago.
昨夜はオマー・コールマン・バンドとバディ・ガイ・レジェンズでライブ中に、バディ・ガイ氏自身が突然ステージに登場した（写真下）。シカゴならではだ。
As one of my friends in music business once said, "as long as you are working on what you have passion for, you can put up with most of nuisance and go over unwanted hurdles".
音楽業界にいる知人の言葉を借りると、"自分の熱情のあることに打ち込んでいる限り、たいていの嫌なことは我慢できるし、障害物も越えて行ける"と。
That is exactly what motivated me to migrate to this country three decades ago. I needed to be in control of my life rather than following the typical career path commonly seen in Japan.
僕が30年前に日本からアメリカに渡ったのは、まさにそれだ。平凡な人生を歩むよりも、自分の運命を自分でコントロールできる道を選んだのだ。
